Our planet and societies are facing enormous challenges. As a business, we have accepted our responsibility to collaborate with our supply chain and industry partners to overcome these. Our mission is to leave a positive legacy that lasts for future generations. All our actions should ensure we are protecting the planet, supporting our communities, and delivering long-term value for our stakeholders.

Understanding our carbon footprint

We have a duty to our environment to minimise our impacts and play our part in ensuring that it is handed to the next generation unharmed. Nolan Roadmarking conducts vital, potentially life-saving work, but we realise that our work has an environmental impact.

As part of the WJ Group we’re collaborating further to understand what our impact is. This means we’re now monitoring different energy consumption patterns using our thermoplastic carbon footprint calculator. This enables us to understand the carbon footprint of each of the materials we use. But it goes much further than this and actively seeks to mitigate our impact wherever possible and preserve resources, leading us down our decarbonisation journey.

Road to Net Zero by 2032

Scope 11

Scope 1 emissions come from direct sources like the vehicles and machinery we use. As part of the WJ Group, our biggest challenge is our large fleet of over 220 trucks, which constitutes our main source of emissions. We’ve been proactive in reducing these emissions, instituting measures such as new vehicle design, extensive driver training, telematics to monitor safe and fuel-efficient driving, and incentivising improvements with a driver reward scheme. On top of this, we’ve switched to electric or hybrid cars where possible. Over several years, this strategy has yielded a consistent decrease in emissions relative to our turnover and mileage, helping the group earn a Planet Mark certificate.

Scope 2 2

Scope 2 emissions are indirect, arising from the electricity and heat we consume. We’ve tracked our operational carbon footprint by monitoring our national electricity and fuel usage, which led to the revelation that our diesel fleet consumption was a significant contributor. In response, we’ve undertaken various initiatives, such as implementing LED lighting, utilising solar panels, and promoting recycling across the company. These steps have allowed us to reduce our Scope 2 emissions significantly.

Scope 3 3

Scope 3 emissions refer to other indirect emissions from our supply chain, which usually comprise the largest part of an organisation’s emissions. We realised that our road marking materials production was a significant contributor. To tackle this, we developed a carbon footprint model, enabling us to measure embodied carbon within our products accurately. This cradle-to-gate lifecycle assessment model is independently verified and provides a clear roadmap for future emissions reduction. We’re further exploring ways to cut these emissions by diverting waste from landfills, developing lower carbon products, refurbishing equipment and various other methods.

WJ Group Forest

Beyond emission reductions, we’re also balancing our output through initiatives like planting half a million trees on over 900 acres of land we own in Scotland. This initiative, set to remove significant amounts of CO2 over the next 40 years, underscores our commitment to reaching net zero by 2032. By combining technology and nature, we’re striving to create a more sustainable future for all.
